Affordable, functional & refined timepieces from Casio Edifice

Casio’s watches have always been synonymous with forward-looking, inventive, and innovative timepieces that are not just incredibly functional, but generally affordable as well. Though the Casio Watches that I know that I’ve grown up with have traditionally been resin, brightly coloured G-Shocks/Baby Gs, there’s a lot more to the brand that meets the eye. With impressive technological innovations like their Tough Solar, Tough Movement, Triple G-Resist, Shock Resist and Triple Sensors. All packaged in their line of G-Shocks and Edifice watches, and it is to Edifice that we’ll be looking to today. Casio’s Edifice line doesn’t exactly share as much glamour as the G-Shock line, but technologically, they are very similar, some even share the exact same movement, but Edifice cases their watches in a more refined package of course. The Edifice line is Casio’s line of sporty and advanced watches that, in my opinion, shares a lot of its design roots with modern motorsports. They’re very much like G-shocks in their functions and movements, but in a much more refined and sportier package.

For me at least, when I come across the brand Casio, the description that comes to mind automatically is tough, technologically advanced timepieces, and I’m willing to bet that it’s the same for most of us too. A reputation like this isn’t one that is received via dumb luck, it’s the fruition of years of testing, R&D, and of course, developing and selling great watches. And that’s what we’re here to take a closer look at today, with a vast array of models in the Edifice inventory, choosing the right one for you might not be as easy as it seems. This is why we’ve taken the initiative to narrow down 7 brilliant Edifice watches that we think, you’ll be very happy to see both on your wrist and in your collection.

CASIO EDIFICE SMARTPHONE LINK EQB-1000XD-1ADR MEN'S WATCH

The first watch we’re looking at today is in our opinion one of the best Edifice models that money can buy; the EQB-1000XD-1ADR. It is one of Edifice’s more advanced timepieces, featuring the brand’s Bluetooth Smartphone link, a tough solar power system that keeps the device topped up via exposure to any form of light source, as well as a multi-hand multi-function chronograph and timekeeping system too.

All of this technology in a case that is only 8.9mm thin is truly a work of engineering brilliance that is hard to find anywhere else (aside from Citizen perhaps, but that’s at a very different price point). It’s a handsome watch too, the one we have today come with sporty red accents along the indexes and subdials, contrasting nicely against the otherwise stealthy black dial, and set in a neatly finished, slim stainless-steel case.

If you’re looking to get your hands on a functional, sporty timepiece that won’t break the bank and looks and feels like something much more expensive than it actually is, you’ll certainly find the EQB-1000XD-1ADR to fit your bill very nicely.

CASIO EDIFICE EFS-S570DC-1AUDF MEN'S WATCH

Of all the watches on the list, this one’s probably my favourite in terms of design, even more so than the impressive EQB-1000DX-1ADR we’ve just looked at. But back to this; the EFS-S570DC-1AUDF, quite a mouthful isn’t it? This watch is part of Edifice’s slim line range of highly elegant yet technical watches. I like to refer to these as dressy sports watches, and yes while watches like the Royal Oak and Nautilus do exist to fill that gap. There’s a much sportier and more rugged feel to these watches as compared to those two. The watch is styled visually after the sports watches from the 70s, with angular case design with an integrated bracelet, though this one dials the angles up to eleven with the octagonal bezel sitting in a proud brushed navy blue against the brushed silver case. Seriously, you’d be hard-pressed to find a surface on this case that isn’t finished to perfection. The pushers are nicely executed and sleek as well adding more to the very contemporary and modern design that this watch has. Functionally, it is a simple chronograph with a date display at 4 and is solar powered too, which means you needn’t fret too much over battery replacements. The EFS-S570DC-1AUDF is a proud celebration of modernizing a traditional tool, integrating current technology with an old-school (albeit timeless) design and display that makes for an incredibly interesting and intriguing wearing experience.

CASIO EDIFICE SOLAR EFS-S550BL-1AVUDF MEN'S WATCH

For the next of the Solar powered watches that we’ll be looking at today, the EFS-S550BL-1AVUDF is the certainly the more conventional and sportier looking one on the list so far. Powered by a solar quartz chronograph caliber, the watch is undoubtedly a reliable daily workhorse for anyone. Aesthetically, the watch looks like a conventional racing themed chronograph, with large bold hands, blocky indexes with 3 sub-dials for the chronograph seconds and minutes, and interestingly, a countdown bezel which nails home the overall motorsport theme of this timepiece. It’s a true-blue-blooded racer’s watch, but made truly affordable and practical for day to day use for everybody, enthusiast or not. The practical applications and operations of its functions are 100% applicable in the real world too. The stealthy black PVD case matches nicely with the overall darkened aesthetics of the watch and the contrasting orange accents adds a nice touch of flair to an otherwise monochromatic piece. The black and grey striped Nato style strap is a solid match too, adding a more laid back and sporty vibe to this already very sporty piece. If you’re in the market for a modern, daily sports watch, its hard to go wrong with the EFS-S550BL-1AVUDF.

CASIO EDIFICE ECB-10PB-1ADF MEN'S WATCH

The last of the smartphone link watches and it’s the most affordable one of the lot: the ECB-10PB-1ADF, a watch that combines 2 of Casio’s technologies into a compact, handsome package that will sit nicely and proudly on your wrist.  With the multifunction features that you will find in most G-Shock/Edifice sports watches along with the Bluetooth smartphone link. The ECB-10PB- is a handsome watch, coming in at a hefty 48.5mm in diameter it is by no means a small watch, but it’s no brute either. It is fitted in a nice black PVD brushed stainless steel case, with a matching integrated rubber strap as well which gives the watch a very futuristic and stealthy aesthetic. The electric blue accents on the watch are certainly what makes the look work overall, adding a splash of colour on an otherwise stealthy monochromatic black watch and I have to say, being a massive fan of blue on watches this shade really does go nicely with the dark theme of the watch. Overall, if you’re looking to get a taste of Edifice’s higher-end and more innovative watches without having to break the bank, then the ECB-10PB-1ADF is a hefty slice of that properly delicious cake.

CASIO EDIFICE EFR-S108D-1AVUDF SILVER STAINLESS STRAP MEN'S WATCH

No list talking about the best watches you can get will be complete without including a proper traditional 3 handed dressy sports watch now, would it? And coming in at a svelte 38.9mm in diameter with a slim case, the Edifice EFR-S180D-1AVUDF looks and feels like a proper old-school simple dressy sports watch. If it wasn’t for the otherwise modern design and the second hand ticking away on the dial, it will be easy to ‘mistake’ this for a traditional vintage stainless-steel sports watch. With an opaline silver brushed dial, slim applied silvered indexes matching the case and hands, and a simple minute ring along the chapter ring, makes for a clean, contemporary and almost modern vintage design with a date window at 3 blending in nicely with the dial. Which really makes the watch a versatile everyday dressy sports watch. The reliable no-nonsense quartz caliber powering it will also ensure that it’ll run practically without fault or a need for servicing for a very long time. Everyone should have a dress watch in their collection and if you haven’t already or are looking for something a bit more classic and versatile to add into yours, then the EFR-S180D-1AVUDF is certainly a worthy contender.

CASIO EDIFICE CHRONOGRAPH TWO TONE STAINLESS STEEL ESK-300SG-1AVUDF MEN'S WATCH

Everyone loves a good sports watch but there’s nothing quite like a smart timepiece to spruce up a suit and tie. Though if you’re the sort who looks at a traditional 3-handed dress watch and thought; can there be more to this than just the time (and occasionally the date)? Then the Edifice ESK-300SG-1AVUDF is certainly the watch for you. Firstly, it’s not the conventional svelte 3-hander mounted on a leather strap. Its case is angular, with slim and unobtrusive lugs linking to an angular and equally slim bracelet as well. It’s a modern-looking piece, that, on paper sounds brash and flashy but the execution is much subtler than that. In fact, it’s an elegant looking piece finished in a two tone rose-gold PVD stainless steel with a lovely dial layout as well. We’re all familiar with the day-date function, displayed through two windows for most watches however, this Edifice ESK-300SG-1AVUDF displays those two functions in a more, traditional sense through sub-dials and hands, all set against a stark black and neatly skeletonized dial. And that gives this simple functioning watch a more complicated yet sensibly subdued look. Overall, it is a really well-balanced yet unconventional look, easily legible and of course being powered by Casio’s own multifunction quartz movement means that it will essentially run itself. If you’re looking to smarten up your wardrobe with a smarter looking timepiece that’s a little more intriguing to look at, then the Edifice ESK-300SG-1AVUDF is certainly for you.
